ASMW FA – Ultra Violent Lights
It’s really tough to pinpoint exactly when this all began. The songs on this record pull from so many different places and times it’s hard to say that it didn’t start at our first conscious thoughts as human beings. Adam and I [Nick] came together in Los Angeles after meeting some years before. We got to talking bout what we wanted to do musically, and the way we lived our lives just seemed to go along with those aspirations. We were down for anything, whatever it took to make sure we were never stuck, and more importantly free to make whatever we wanted out of it. This ethos was constantly tested, and every time it held fast. This was all we wanted to do, and nothing was going to keep us from it. In the summer of 2008, we headed for San Diego to record Here In Filth, with no intention of returning to L.A. until it was complete, and even then it was only temporary since we had decided to relocate to the east coast, and sink our teeth in to New York City. The calendar said it was summer, but we hit every kind of weather you could throw at us. And since our plans to take a van fell through, we had all our gear in the back of a pickup truck, crammed in the cab and driving in shifts straight through. Rain, snow, tornadoes, and more rain. 48 hours later we were in New York, where we started playing shows immediately. We caught wind of a drummer named Robi through a mutual friend, and after months of courtship, he eventually joined the band and things just clicked. We took a room in Manhattan and spent our nights rehearsing. In that time, our record found it’s way out, keeping it family while getting a hand from our friends at SideCho.
We didn’t try to align ourselves with any specific “scene” or sound that was happening at the time. When we wrote the record, the songs came one by one on their own. They all in some way reflect what was going on at that exact time, but still veer in to the past and still question what’s next? Recording it was not unlike writing it, and after countless Newcastle’s, and a couple weeks in a garage in San Diego with our friend/manager Aaron Rubin, we left with this record. We’re extremely proud of it and it was always our intention to take it on the road and take it as far as we can push it. We don’t shy away from risk, and playing things safe has never appealed to us much. Why should we start now? What can we say? We’re gluttons for pain…
